    Leipzig Homework

Two weeks from today, the boy and I will already be en route to Leipzig.  Of course there's a major panic over what I'm going to wear (and how to fit it all into the suitcase).  But I'll leave that for a moment and focus on planning which bands to see.

Thankfully my buddies on the Americans in Leipzig list have prepared some excellent spreadsheets of all the bands (including genre information and links to soundclips) to make the research a bit easier.  So I thought it only fair to share them with you:

Simple list for easy pasting into Excel

More complex list including time and venue (where available)

    Happy listening!

    Hey Musos!

Does anyone have any idea where I can sell some old music magazines?  I'm trying to get rid of quite a few copies of NME and Melody Maker going back to the early 90s.  I don't want to sell them on Ebay as there are too many to justify the hassle.  So before I recycle them, does anyone know of anyone/where that would buy this kind of thing?

Also, what the heck do I do with a bunch of old cassettes?  Is their only destination the charity shop?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    A Warning
I feel compelled to tell you that Wicked was the most god-awful shite I've ever seen in my life.  It was truly truly dreadful in every respect and had not one redeeming feature - unless you enjoy that Emperor's New Clothes feeling when everyone around you is laughing at things that aren't funny and applauding something that deserves to be pelted with rotten tomatoes.

The world has never seen a better example of the triumph of marketing hype over artistic integrity.  Clearly the production's entire budget went on advertising, as it certainly wasn't spent on writers, lyricists, costumes, set, special effects, a sound system, a choreographer, or any of the other necessities of putting on a show.  I swear to you that it was SO BAD that I'd launch a counter-marketing campaign if only I had the resources.  But I'll have to settle for spewing my bile here and begging, pleading, and imploring all of you to avoid spending your hard-earned money on this travesty.

    Please spread the word!

I have to say that I am so pleased with the changing political situation in the US.  It restores my faith in the American people, and human beings in general.  Perhaps we're not all headed for hell in a handbasket after all.

I'm doubly pleased because it eases my conscience for not voting this time.  My absentee ballot went to my old address so I didn't receive it in a timely manner.  I would be seriously kicking myself if things hadn't turned out so well.

Thank goodness.  Here's to the future.

Aquarius: "Changes are afoot, which you find threatening.  You don't take kindly to feeling out of control.  Try to adjust to the inevitable - resisting won't help."

How true.  Tomorrow is my first day at the agency.  I'm excited.  New things are afoot.  I'm looking forward to my brand new life.

Take a deep breath and dive in...

    Cheap hotels in London
Can anyone recommend any cheap hotels/B&Bs in London?  The more central the better.  I've been asked for recommendations by several people who are coming to visit and I don't know what to tell them.  There are about a thousand hotels on Gower Street but I don't know if any of them are affordable and/or any good.

    I did it!!!
On Friday 30th June just after 1pm, I jumped out of a plane at 10,000 feet. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. The brain can’t really comprehend the reality of the situation, but that doesn’t make it any less scary. I screamed for the entire freefall. The video is hilarious.

I am so proud of myself and feel I can now do ANYTHING.

Depeche Mode ticket for sale (O2 Wireless Festival)
Does anyone want to buy a ticket for Depeche Mode at the O2 Wireless Festival on Sunday 25th June?  They're playing with Goldfrapp, Gang of Four, Suzerain and others.  Go here for more info.

I bought the ticket for £46.95 but it can be yours for £40.  Or make me an offer.  Apparently I have to go to Norfolk that weekend to meet the boyfriend's parents (eek!).

Let me know if you're interested...

A Change is as good as a Rest
Leipzig was divine.  As expected.  And maybe even more so.  Managed to do it at a sane pace this year and get some sleep (in the daytimes, as obviously the nights were for partying).  Am suffering post-festival comedown/decompression.  Having fantasies of quitting this temp job, though there's nothing else lined up.  Slept all day yesterday.  Still tired.  But it was worth it.  And more.

Today is the boy's birthday, so there are dinner plans tonight.  Then it's practically the weekend.  See you all at Antilight followed by Slimelight?  Hope so.  Though I've got a small sore throat and a very groggy head.  Also, please get rid of the summer heat.  The cold weather in Leipzig was perfect.

    Off to Leipzig...
So I guess I'm ready.  I've been productive.  I've filed my taxes, done the shopping and packed the bags.  I wish I'd had more time to do band research, but I've done my best.

So it's off to Leipzig for the best fun of my life.  Hope to see many of you there.  We're at the Novotel.  Back on Tuesday.

Now for some much needed sleep...

    My Next Play
It's about time I posted this, as diaries are filling up. My next theatrical venture is a transfer of Saved or Destroyed which several of you saw last summer at the Old Red Lion in Angel. You may remember that it got Critic's Choice in Time Out two weeks in a row, and on the back of that, we're transferring to the Battersea Arts Centre (technically an "off-West End" venue) for a two week run in April as part of their Critic's Choice season.

    Details as follows:
    Saved or Destroyed
    at the Battersea Arts Centre
Lavender Hill, London SW11 5TN (closest station: Clapham Junction)
    18th to 30th April
8pm Tuesdays to Saturdays, 6pm Sundays, no shows on Mondays

Tickets are £6 if you book before 11th April (£10 after).
    Box Office on 020 7223 2223

So you should all come along and see me in this bizarre comedy.  I play an evil mother (my specialty) and also the voice of a dead baby.  It's all good fun.  For those of you who saw it the last time around, it's likely to be similar to the original production (same cast and director) but with a few things tweeked, refined, and polished, and hopefully better set and costumes.  And in a nicer theatre of course.  So get your tickets now!

    Zines (free) and Cure collection
Does anyone have any use for old issues of BRV/Tombraver, Kaleidoscope, Industrial Nation, Meltdown, etc? I'm about to chuck them out, so you're welcome to them if you want them. I've got about a carrier bag full. So speak up if you're interested; otherwise I'm feeding them to the recycling bin.

And I've decided to sell my collection of Cure magazines. Any takers? It's a sizeable collection, going back to the 80s (Smash Hits, Melody Maker, etc). There's a lot of Siouxsie stuff in there as well. I just don't have room for it anymore. The end of an era. I might have to put it on ebay. I'd prefer for it to go to a real Cure lover, rather than a rich collector, so if you know anyone who might be interested, please point them in my direction. Also please let me know if there's a better way to sell something like this than on ebay.

    The pre-move clear-out has commenced.

    Techie Question
What's the easiest way to wipe everything from the hard-drive of a laptop? And what's the best was to dispose of the laptop itself?

As part of the pre-move sort, I'm getting rid of my old laptop. I've taken all the files off it, but I'm not sure what to do next. Any advice much appreciated.

Further to my earlier post about houses and looking for somewhere to live, I did find my new favourite place in London last night, thanks to [info]morbidforg. I'd like to live there! I wanted to weep with joy. I expect I'll be going there again. Love love love!

    Sponsor Me
Two weeks from today, I will be jumping out of a plane – at 10,000 feet – for charity. So please click here to sponsor me. Or if you prefer to deal in old-fashioned cash, please email me your pledge and I will collect the money off you next time I see you (assuming I survive the jump). The money goes to a charity that provides nurses for family carers of people with dementia.

Big thanks to those of you who've already bowed to my will and sponsored me. Your pennies are much appreciated!

    God help me!
